Animal Body Parts

Human anatomy is a widely taught subject in school both through biology and foreign language classroom. However, animal anatomy is often left for self-study time. Today we are offering you an opportunity to learn more about various animals of the world.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common animal body parts:

Ear – an outside organ that can have a visual covering made out of fur or skin or be presented by a hole in the skull, used for hearing sounds.

Trunk – a long nose of animal used to smell small prey or transfer water for hydration and minimizing overheating.

Mouth – an opening at the front of the head which allows the animal to consume food.

Claw – a curved or pointed nail at the end of an animals paw which allows them to grab, scratch, hang on or fight.

Stomach – the area at the bottom of the animals body where food is digested. Some animals have pouches for carrying their offspring and some have flapping skin which protects their internal organs during a fight.

Leg – a limb of animal used for standing and walking.

Tail – an elongated part of the spine or backbone that animals use for various reasons: to navigate, to stand, to show emotions.

Back – the rear surface of the animal body.

Fur – the thick covering of hair all over an animal’s body.

Head – the upper part of the animal’s body where vital organs are located.

Horn – a permanent bony growth from the head that animals use for protection or to assert dominance.

Eye – the organ at the side or front of the head used for seeing.

Nose – the organ at the front of the animal’s head used for smelling.

Neck – a part which connects the head of the animal to the rest of its body.

Spot – a differently coloured area of fur that may create a pattern on an animal’s body.

Teat – a mammary gland on a female animal from which offsprings are fed.

Hoof – the horny part of the foot that is hard and flat.

Beak – the projecting jaws of a bird that are usually hard and made out of bone.

Wing – a limb of a bird or other flying animals which helps them stay in the air.

Feather – a small flat appendages growing from a bird’s body that creates a covering much like fur for other animals.

Claw – a curled nail of the bird that allows them to grasp branches and potentially food if it is a predatory bird.
